We are now offering cabinets made from highly renewable bamboo. Botanically categorized as grass, bamboo is one of the world’s most sustainable resources. It is eco-friendly friendly because it not only grows fast, but it grows without pesticides and little water. It is harvested after 5 to 6 years of growth, so products made from bamboo, like bamboo cabinets, are a good eco-conscious option.
Hardness is the main factor in durability. Bamboo can be as soft as pine and harder than maple depending on the species of bamboo used and when it was harvested. Our bamboo supplier, Teragren, uses only bamboo harvested at maturity (5-1/2 to 6 years) when fiber density peaks. As a result, Teragren bamboo averages 25 percent harder than red oak and 12 percent harder than North American maple. Because bamboo has a higher density of fiber, it absorbs less moisture. As a result, it does not shrink as much as most hardwoods.
Bamboo comes in to 2 natural colors, caramelized, which is derived from a steam treatment process called "Carbonization" that heats the bamboo throughout and gives it a warm, tea-stained color. The second color is natural, the color of bamboo untreated. And of course it may be stained like other woods.
